Crime in Myspace
In class, one of the questions was about the legal and economic issues of produsage. A main legal issue that comes to my mind is the story of Megan Meier, who killed herself after a myspace hoax. This brings up the issue of legality in the social networking world. We can never really know if people are real or not because people constantly portray others and it is a difficult medium to control for age limits. This is one of the sad results of what the negative sides of social networking can do.
That is a really good point... The Internet makes it WAY too easy to mask your true identity, and lie about who you really are.
ReplyDeleteIt's an ideal platform for predators and sex offenders to work from, especially if they have an account within one of the mail social networks like facebook or myspace which provides access to the younger crowd.
The internet is an exciting and interesting thing to be a part of, but just because it is on your computer screen, doesn't make it any less "real" in some situations.
Through all of the new programs coming out each week, whether it be the newest aim, messenger, facebook chat, etc, we will never know who is real or not. I do believe though that we can restrict what happens to us on the internet through safety precautions and in all honesty, common sense.
ReplyDeleteEven though we may not know who is behind the other screen, we can still figure out in some sense if someone is a sketch due to how they type, text, etc. I think as a society we have come accustomed to conversation and communication through typing and texting rather than just typing, so shouldn't we be able to figure it out through a computer screen?
