Second Life

I know we have spoken or at least mentioned the huge hit, Second Life, in class at some point this quarter. I just wanted to speak on it a little bit more. I recently remember talking to a friend of mine who had friends who were married that used Second Life. The reasons for using this site was because they could create anyone and do anything they wanted in their own virtual realm. What caught me off guard was that the people involved in the Second Life scene were caught up more in the virtual world than in the real world. One went as far as having an affair with a person they had met in Second Life.

I guess my question is how are we to stop this virtual world from taking over our physical, tangible world? It seems like it is taking over our daily lives with email, social-networking sites, news, etc. When something along the lines of an affair happens, is this virtual world damaging to us?

    It seems very interesting to me that people can be so invested in a virtual world in so far as much to have affairs online, but if the trend of the internet continues I think people submersing themselves in the internet world is only going to increase and Im not sure there is much we can do about it.

    It's a bit extreme, as if your insides have been ripped from your tangible body and turned inside out. Your thoughts, your desires, fantasies and such are being enacted in the virtual world that would otherwise would not be possible in the real world. As we've discussed before, this is just a neutral platform and what we do with it is what determines if it's "right" or "wrong"

    I still find online dating and meeting potential partners online risky. I just feel that people are different online [while many claim to be their "true" selves] and that there is nothing that can take the place of face-to-face interaction. How can you really know someone if you have never met? I just want to stress the importance of the first opinions and those cannot be obtained online
