GLOBAL FACEBOOK

My boyfriend is Australian, and lives in Perth, Western Australia. So when starting this assignment, I thought it would be interesting to look at how people in different countries use Facebook versus in the United States. From what I observed, on a majority of my friends facebook accounts from Australia, they use facebook very differently than in the US. Their pages are filled with quizzes of every kind. It is basically what all of them do on the social network. They rarely write on each others walls. It is mainly a page full of quizzes and applications with status updates every once in awhile. None of them have very many pictures tagged of them. I found this very interesting compared to people in the United States. This leads me to the second person I looked at. This girl was from Croatia. Again, like the Australians, she used facebook as an area to take many quizzes, but she also had albums after albums of only pictures of herself and no one else. I also notice, even though she is from Croatia, she wrote in English in many of her statuses and picture comments. I then checked my friends page who is from Switzerland and I noticed the same thing, that many of his updates were in English. Lastly, I looked at a girl who I lived with in Barcelona, Spain for a month when I was in high school. Compared to the other 2 from Australia and Croatia, I saw hers as pretty typical from what mine or other citizens of the United States facebook looks like. She had tons of pictures from her at her University tagged as well as on vacations. She did not update her status frequently, but when people wrote on her wall or she had a status it was in Spanish or Catalun. From looking at 3 people from 3 different countries, I found it a cultural thing as to how you act on facebook and what you do.

Now lastly, Here is a funny video about facebook teasing it with Eharmony.com.

  1. That commercial is funny and so true. It seems as though there are people these days that live for facebook book. For example, they only take pictures so that they may be put up on facebook. Or in a relationship, the "what are we talk" is defined around what to change your facebook relationship status and whether or not people want to make it "facebook official". Oh facebook, got to love it as a procrastination tool, though.
