The Missing Part, Long Overdue

For my class presentation at the beginning of the quarter, I presented about Hollywood Dropouts and their online show called "Villans the Series." The other production group I wanted to show was Wong Fu Productions.

I'll let this video clip do the talking, but the key points related to the course to pay attention to is the concept of the "long tail" and how the internet gives a whole new playing field/participatory culture.

Twitter as a News Source

Incorporating what we have discussed in the past week, I have decided to post about how Twitter now serves as a mainstream news feed for a lot of people. Any major new source has a twitter page and post daily tweets about the top stories of the day. This allows people to quickly search through headlines while doing their daily twitter browsing. The news source will either give a quick summary of the story on twitter and/or just link the post to their own site. This is definitely a new and efficient way of receiving and delivering news. It also allows users to customize who they are getting their news from. People can follow multiple topics/interest through twitter, and it is all delivered on one page with daily updates. Here is an article that shows the top 100 news feeds for twitter.

Final

Final Exam

DMST 2200

Choose 2 of the following essay 3 questions. Your answers should be 2-4 single-spaced pages each and should be written in essay form with a thesis, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Please make your answers interesting, well written and full of examples and references to the course readings that demonstrate that you have a nuanced view of what is going on in the digital media landscape. Also please write a short answer to the question about Free! Please email your completed exam PASTED INTO THE BODY OF AN EMAIL WITH YOU NAME ON THE TOP to me at adrienne.russell@du.edu by NOON Monday Nov. 23. If you don’t hear back from me by 1pm send it again. There will be no late exams excepted.

1. Digital tools and networks provide opportunities for amateur cultural production and distribution, for politicians and corporations to have more direct contact with the public, and for them to leverage the public in generating content and support. And some say power dynamics are changing among corporations, politicians, experts, professional and everyday people. Please write an essay discussing the implications of new media tools (and values) and these changing power dynamics in the last presidential campaign, using specific examples of how new media is being used in the campaigns by politicians and their supporters to illustrate your argument. Extra credit if you reference and discuss the 3 ways described by Joe Trippi, on the Web 2.0 panel, that digital networks helped the Obama campaign.

2. Please watch this video “an open letter to all the Rosie O’Donnells” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJCkHu3trKc and read and watch the material related to it. Write an essay about convergent culture, using this as an example to first illustrate and second challenge and/or support the notion of convergent culture as a frame through which to view the contemporary media environment. Include in your essay a discussion of the intersection of commercial and do-it-yourself media products.

3. The scholars and journalists we have read, watched and discussed in this course have presented various views of the future of digital media (and therefore of our future in general). Discuss some of these different views, their strengths and weaknesses, and finally your own informed opinion about the future of digital media and how it is changing how we socialize, produce and exchange culture and become informed about the world around us. Please specifically address the ideas of the personal panopticon, collective intelligence, the long tail, convergence, social networking and Free! in your answer.

Everyone please answer this question about Free!

Why are so many things becoming free? Please provide examples of the various ways companies make money by giving things away?

Questions We Wanted to Answer

Is digital media changing our capacity to remember things, listen, focus...
ie how is it changing the way we think?

How will the internet evolve?

What does digital media do to notions of copyright ownership and appropriation.

How do we know what is true?

Is the human race collectively becoming an ultimate being?

How is new media changing our relations to one another?

Is it good or bad?

Does the internet propel globalization? If so how?

Future Internet

I've noticed a lot lately the internet shifting to inform the public of the proposed future of the internet. First the Bing commercials on TV seem to promote the "decision engines" especially designed for easier and simpler web searches. However I personally do not see the difference between this new search engine and any of the others available on the internet. Although the commercials promise simplicity and less clutter. And then there are the new Yahoo commercials which center around the idea of the new yahoo being all about "you." I find these commercials interesting because now the internet is at the stage where it is fully accepting and promoting the idea of personalization and collective intelligence. I feel that until now the phenomenon with web 2.0 and collective intelligence was known by only those that actually participated in it and now there is large promotion and spreading of it. It is all exciting and promising for the future of the internet.

News/Iphone

As I was brainstorming more alternative sources of news, I thought of something that was right in front of my face, and that is my iphone. On my iphone, I have downloaded applications that allow me to get notifications from news sources as text messages so I am able to keep up to date with the news. Then, that made me think of the DU account. I cannot remember the name, but i'm sure we all get those text messages of news on campus like when school is cancelled or something has happened. This again is another source of alternative news the school uses to get important things out to the students. All of this shows the convergence of media, that I am able to get alerts through text messages from news websites about important updates in the world.

List of 50 Social News Websites

As I am not an avid user of reading alternative news websites, like shelby said, everyone took any that I did know of. So instead here is a list of 50 social news websites. A lot of them are ones that we have already talked about in class like digg. Online grants people all types of news stories for their desire. One that no one really mentioned is Perezhilton.com . Even though it is mainly a celebrity news website, he does always add important news information that is going on. I every so often find a story that is really intriguing or interesting that I do not even find on a regular news site.

The Resident- alternative news website

So you all took the best alternative news outlet examples. I was therefore left to do some google searching for other alternative media outlets. It took a while but I found this blog-like website run by a girl who is viciously against corporate mainstream media biases. Basically she makes all the videos about current issues we already know about as well as smaller, unique stories that are worthy of attention but are not noticed by the major networks. I encourage you all to check it out!

for Wednesday

and PS in case you missed the announcement, the final will be take home. I'll post it here on Wednesday and you will have until Monday 11/23 at noon to complete it.

Goofy News Reporters

After Youtubing around for all too long, and forgetting my initial intentions (being to find something for this post), I stumbled upon THIS video. I do not really have a great way to link this to our class discussions, except for the fact that they are news reporters, which relates to journalism. This video was way too humorous for me not to share with my fellow classmates, so I dedicated my last post to it. I think it shows that even serious news reporters have a goofy and non so serious side as well.

News and The Onion

I just thought since we were talking about news this past week that I would bring up The Onion. Sort of the opposite of what every other site, paper, article, etc are doing out there. The Onion, I believe to be the funniest news source out there, has created a satirical side to news. The Onion, being fake, still gives insight to some of the problems that occur and some of the newest inventions/technologies out there. Instead of dwelling on boring old news, it was genius to create a paper such as The Onion to liven people's spirits up.

Alternative news source

A lot of blogs out there act the same as news sources, simply giving you all the information you need on certain topics. In the last year or so I've gone to the DU hockey blog, LetsGoDU, run by alumni and students. Instead of going to all different news sources to get the information after games each week, I visit their site and they compile all the statistics, game recaps and videos.

I think that blogs that have all the information are interesting to compare the different ways the same events are covered. It's great to see what each outlet does with the same information. Whether it's a blog post, a video, an actual article or a feature it shows all the different facets.

Available News

News in today’s society is extremely broad. The variety of news available today is insane. People can find: health news, entertainment news, weird news, celebrity news, science news, local news, nation news, religion news, educational news, political news, and so much more. Because we live in the era of information, people only have to Google a subject to find pages upon pages of articles about that subject.

Canada Big Box Market: A Cheap Scheme

Keeping with the theme of big business of my last post, I found this funny video on youtube about a company called Big Box Market , which heavily resembles Wal-Mart. In correlation to class, this video exposes how big companies are taking the cheapest and easiest way out, uncaring how it affects their customers, similar to the McDonalds proposal the Movie described in class on Wednesday. Although the McDonald scheme was fake, it was based off of an idea that big companies really don’t care about their customers. They only care that you buy their products and that the cost of producing their products are the cheapest possible. Here’s the clip, enjoy!

Walmartopia: A Musical on a Mission

As I was browsing through the internet I came across this interesting clip from a musical called Walmartopia: A Musical On A Mission. In correlation to a movie we watched on Wednesday, this movie exposes certain negative aspects – such as the working conditions – Wal-Mart employees suffers by using satire and humor. The story is about a working mother who speaks out against Wal-Mart and finds herself in a futuristic world where Wal-Mart rules the world. I enjoyed the actual musical, but here is a little clip of it…kind of like a trailer:

Google News

One sight i believe many people would use to get their news would be Google News. Mainly because most people use google and everything it has to offer, why not use google news? It is up to date and has the latest braking stories. But what i noticed about this website was the layout of the page. Reflecting back to the presentation on Archives and the entertainment we all enjoyed when the class was looking up past sites, i feel that googles news page is not a lavish as other news sources like CNN and Fox News. It is still a really organized site, but little pops out. This site is not years behind like the white house's page was originally but only like a year behind! Still the sources are good and so is the content.

So being that I really don't get much of my news via the web I really had to do a bit of searching for alternative forms of news. I am really amazed at how many avenues are available for the average person to obtain their news. The amount of variety in the news is also quite staggering. There is hardcore news like www.CNN.com, local news like www.9news.com, political news such as www.FOXnews.com, humorous news like www.funnymos.com, parody news such as www.thespoof.com, and the list goes on and on. This many options certainly offer people a much wider choice. The masses are no longer stuck with accepting only what the major networks offer. People can actually get news from other people who have the same view as they do. Communities can be built on these similar opinions. So no matter what your opinions are there is something for everyone. Ofcourse the best part of news online is you can always find footage of newscasters making really funny bloopers!!!

News Flash!

So this week we are talking about news/journalism, an interesting way to get news is through Twitter. One can subscribe to any person or figure/organization to get the latest news of their interest.

Usually short blurbs gives the reader an idea of what the news piece might be, and a link is provided so that they can check out the latest news. There are many major corporations and news networks, or even just news-based organizations are using Twitter as a way to communicate with their audience. For example, CNN has several Twitter accounts for various kinds of news: breaking news, newsroom, news report, and so on.

You can find them all here.

Is No More Fake News, News?

No More Fake News is a alternative news website started by Jon Rappoport who was a freelance reporter for 20 years. Since 2000 Jon has been writing news articles of big stories in the news and breaking stories for the website as sort of a citizen journalist. He uses the site also to promote other services he offers such as soul reading, business consultation, and imagination work. My question is would you consider this a news site that is creditable and would you even consider ever going to the website to get news?

Getting the Audience Involved

For this week's blog I thought about how we were discussing in class the shift from viewing to interacting in news. I think this is a very progressive idea in which the media should act upon and take up. With the increase in connectivity in today's world there is a much better possibility of hearing and seeing news from all around the world. Not only will one be able to see news from everywhere but this will also allow for different viewpoints to be heard. I believe the more you get a population involved in news reporting the less bias there will be or at least there will be arguments from every side of the story.
There is already a culture of self reporting that has begun and an example of this is CNN's iReport. Most people have already heard of iReport either through watching CNN or going on there website. But it's really great to see how CNN has incorporated this feature into their daily news. Often you will see iReports on their main page along with short videos played during their actual air time. I hope to see more of this kind of reporting incorporated in media as we continue to advance or technology. Eventually everyone will be able to gather their ideas in the melting pot of news, which I can only hope for instead hearing corporate fed bull.

Learning Curve

In the past week or two, my friends and I have delved into many technology services that would increase our efficiency in productive collaborations and projects. We all learned and exchanged our knowledge on Google Document, Gmail, Gtalk, tokbox.com, Skype, and Wordpress.

Looking back, learning the in's and out's of all those services and utilizing them (after experimenting with many alternatives and combos as well), was quite a task. It took some time, but it's amazing how much technology can affect our lives.

Documents can be changed on the fly while chatting with your collaborators in live time. Groups can do video conferencing with more than just two people at a time, making officer meetings a breeze. You could even do your homework and laundry in the middle of it too!

1. What are the strengths and weakness of the open system according to Wales?

2. Hoiberg references the following quote by Mumford to make a point about Wikipedia:
[An explosion of information could] brind about a state of intellectual enervation and deletion hardly to be distinguished from massive ignorance. What does he mean by this? And what do these comments suggest about Britannica?

3. What are the biggest challenges faced by Wikipedia?

4. Is wikipedia democratic in process (is it run democratically), as a product (does it give people info they need to participate in democracy), in its effects (does it mobilize people)?

5. What are the fundamental issues associated with each form of encyclopedia (for example expert vs collective intelligence).

Lisencing Your Tweets!

As I was surfing for creative inspiration for web design, I came across an interesting concept.... http://tweetcc.com/

It's basically a Creative Commons-like licensing for your tweets on Twitter. It's quite interesting, what do you guys think about licensing tweets? Twitter does make it clear that they don't own or have any hold over your tweets, but what about people who want to license their tweets? Why do you think people want to license their tweets?

The Onion

So right away when the topic of new media journalism came up, I instantly thought of The Onion. I know The Onion started out as a newspaper that was produced from Boulder, but since they have been utilizing the internet their fan base has grown much bigger. Instead of just news articles they offer videos and radio as well, along with all of the ways to share them through social networking sites.
This is one of the examples of the videos that they offer. Right now the video is the most popular on the site but you can browse through all their video content.

Ultra-Realistic Modern Warfare Game Features Awaiting Orders, Repairing Trucks

I think The Onion, by using fake news stories, really shows how ridiculous and over the top news and media can be now a days in an effort to get people to watch. I also think they make good use of sarcasm to draw people to the biases and issues we have as well.

Oh and as a side note I noticed today, the Hulu posted The Yes Man movie we just watched if anyone is interested.

One of my former high school teachers just posted this on her facebook. Very cool as it has everything to do with what we are talking about in this class.

Nike Plus

So for my project today, I am going to talk about the Nike + Ipod. The Nike + Ipod combines workouts, music, and the computer to help people obtain goals. It is actually really interesting and I will share more about it in class today, but I think it is a great example of convergent culture. The Ipod comes with a chip that you place in your Nike running shoes. Then you have your playlist during your workout, come home, and plug your ipod into your computer. It then shows you, your entire workout while syncing to your computer. It is pretty amazing and a cool idea. For more information check out: nikeplus.com and the apple store.

SourceForge.net

When it comes to participating in the internet culture, it's important to have the necessary tools to do so. http://sourceforge.net/ is a free open source database that allows participants to develop as well as use these software programs for many different kinds of purposes. Instead of paying hundreds or thousands for some Adobe software, users may be able to find a free alternative version to the kind of software that they need for the creation of digital media or programs.

These programs could also include useful tools, such "Fire" that allows groups to do virtual conferencing.

The Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is a nonprofit organization that started in 1996. The website, www.archive.org, is dedicated to building and maintaining a free and openly accessible online digital library and an archive of the World Wide Web. So it is basically like a “digital time capsule”. This is a great tool for historians, scholars, and the general public to access the historical collections that exist in digital format.
Since 1996 expanded into different archive projects, which include:
The Wayback Machine is how I first found out about the internet archive. What it does is archives screenshots of websites that would otherwise be unseen after a site would update.
So this allows user to see the progression of the internet from 1996 to the present, and it also shows hows how user interactivity of website platforms has changed over the years.

John Stewart Views of Net Neutrality

This is a really funny explanation of net neutrality from an recent episode of John Stewart. He puts it in a very entertaining explanation of his own views verses people against net neutrality. This is an old concept with what we are talking about in class, but in light of the great video we saw of him on Crossfire in class i thought it would be entertaining. He discusses the Internet Freedom act of 2009, which sounds like it would be a good policy but it gives the freedom to companies to control the internet. One of the biggest supporters was John McCain, who we have learned the only source of internet he uses is e-mail and that is only to an extent. This is a great video and i especially enjoy the closing comment John Stewart says. Watch it and see what you think!

The Lonely Island

After talking about the various web tv series I remembered one that became very popular but started out at a grassroots level. The Lonely Island features different comedic skits by Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg. All three received many fans, followers, and much support through their skits and various short movies. One of which was a web series entitled "The Bu" which was a drama based in the California city of Malibu. Their shorts became so popular that many were featured on SNL. Popular shorts include "Jizz in my pants," "Like a boss," "Dick in a box," and "i'm on a boat." They have re-vamped their website and moved it to blogspot.com but i found it interesting that you still have access to their old site exactly as it was. I like the new aspect of having their info in blogform because, as is intended by any basic blog site, there is more participation and constant updates.

The Pew

I found an interesting site that does research into the social impact of the internet, as they say, "The Pew Internet & American Life Project is one of seven projects that make up the Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan, nonprofit "fact tank" that provides information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world." The Pew has many categories that it researches including blogs, gaming, health, politics and many others. They post the most recent articles about their research and within the last year have posted some interesting articles about politics and the internet. There are articles like, " How the Shift to an Online, On-Demand World of Content Could Impact Political Discourse" which talks about the high turnout of voters in the last election and what the increased use of the internet may have done to increase this turnout. I found that most of the articles, especially, about politics, are things we have already discussed in class but this site seem particularly good at having a good group of infomation that is informative yet engaging.

The Truth's and Philosophies Behind The Daily show

I stumbled upon this book while researching The Daily Show a bit. As an avid watcher of both Stephen Colbert's 'The Colbert Report', and Jon Stuarts 'The Daily Show', I have always wondered what the main purpose, goals, and philosophies were behind The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I always wanted to know the irony of it all, and how many of these so called "jokes" are intended to be taken lightly.

This book called "The Daily Show and Philosophy" answers many of these questions throughout the novel. This book analyses and discusses some of the big questions in politics that are talked and joked about in the show. It discusses just how fake the show really is and the show's views on religion. I think people should know the rationale behind the jokes on these shows. They "joke" about some pretty serious issues that really might not be a laughing matter beyond the TV show.

I hope I can get my hands on a copy of this book.

Obama Longtail

Good evening everyone!

We've been talking all quarter about the longtail. We have touched on things such as Google's ability to harness it and become profitable as well as general comments about how is it conducive to the spreading of a more complex, diverse culture. More and more companies are starting to take advantage of the longtail as a deviation from the traditional business model, the online music industry is a great example of this.

That said, the longtail extends beyong the web. I just found an article that discusses how Obama took advantage of the longtail effect but with regard to campaign financing. Basically, Obama didn't spend all of his time and energy seeking out a few multiple $K campaign contributions but made an effort to receive MANY smaller dollar amount contributions; the average contribution was $109. All in all, he raised to most money out of any of the candidates by taking advantage of the longtail.

Pretty much Obama has been our prime example this quarter for a various number of topics and is just another instance.

Second Life

I know we have spoken or at least mentioned the huge hit, Second Life, in class at some point this quarter. I just wanted to speak on it a little bit more. I recently remember talking to a friend of mine who had friends who were married that used Second Life. The reasons for using this site was because they could create anyone and do anything they wanted in their own virtual realm. What caught me off guard was that the people involved in the Second Life scene were caught up more in the virtual world than in the real world. One went as far as having an affair with a person they had met in Second Life.

I guess my question is how are we to stop this virtual world from taking over our physical, tangible world? It seems like it is taking over our daily lives with email, social-networking sites, news, etc. When something along the lines of an affair happens, is this virtual world damaging to us?

The Future of the Long Tail

Will the long tail hold up in the future? Ralph Simon is a host of a show called Future Talks series on the Media Conversations channel. Ralph discussed the future of the long tail with Glen Hiemstra and Gerd Leonhard on a episode ironically called The Future of the Long Tail . After a short ten minutes of deliberation there wasn't a decision if there the long tail would survive but will change. Here are some of the theories of what will happen to the long tail in the future.
+ Expansion of whole planet will cause the long tail to not get longer but fatter
+ Long Tail companies
+ Pieces of the "tail" will separate into other realms/ forms

Under Age Social Networking

Recently there have been several articles and videos on cnn.com about under age social networking. Technically you are supposed to be 13 years of age to sign up for social networking sites such as facebook and myspace. But recently these sites have seen and explosion of younger kids bypassing these limitations by lying about their age. Here is a video with several skype guests discussing the problem, and here is an article that came out right before the video.
I feel the moral issue on this is very hard to solve because every one grows up with different rules and boundaries. Some adults may do well in teaching their kids how to be mature and safe while others might shelter their kids so much that the kid actually ends up acting out. It is hard to draw a line on whether one is mature enough to be on these social networking sites, but then again we see immaturity everyday with people 20+ like what is mentioned in the video. I am also not sure where I stand on this issue because I have a younger brother who is 12 but has a facebook. From what I can tell he acts maturely on the social site but there could be many things I cannot see that he's doing.

Visual Complexity: Connect the World though the Internet

i found a website, called Visual Complexity, where people have created computer programs to measure all different kinds of social networking sites. There are many different categories such as art, biology, computer systems, music, and much more. They use the internet data base to help connect other entities to one another. It is a website to show maps of connection between individuals and its society. I personally really like the Ecotonoha example, which discusses environment to cope with global warming. But there are hundred more examples and categories of these common connections.

Project Web Bot – Predicting the Future?

In relation to the class discussion of analyzing how people use the internet, and in what ways they do it, I remembered hearing about this program – Web bot -- that was developed anonymously in the early 90’s. After doing a brief online research, this is what I discovered:

The Web Bot Project was developed in or around 1995, anonymously, to predict the up and downs of the stock market. Similar to how Google search engine works by “indexing” the web, Web Bot crawls through the web looking for trends for keywords that people type into the internet world. Based off of these trends it is said that Web Bot can predict major events – such as 9/11. I know instantly this sounds ridiculous, however, Professor Dick Bierman ran an experiment, with volunteers, showing them a series of pictures. Surprisingly, the volunteers tended to react seconds before the picture was shown. Is it possible that the bigger the event the more time reaction people have before the event? Is it possible that people’s words or moods are directly related to possible future events? And is it possible for the Web Bot to detect these trends and ultimately predict the future? Many say no, but some fully believe it’s possible…

If you’re interested in doing your own research here are some links:

Google- Change the World

Here is what I am going to be presenting over today: Google's Blog. More specifically, I am going to be presenting on a movement that they have created around some of their technology, Google Earth. Google challenged people to be innovative and use the technology of Google Earth to change the world. A recent blog highlights the top 6 people/organizations utilizing Google Earth to be catalysts of change to make local and global communities. It's really interesting how they are being change agents either through political support or community support; I encourage all of you to watch all of these videos.

Offline Stress Disorder

Rehab clinics have been opening up for a new sort of a addiction called Internet Addiction Disorder for people who just loves to be online a little bit too much. Even though the addiction may not directly effect someones day to day it will cause anxiety if for instance they don't have their iphone or access to the internet. Along with the disorder it theories have been coming up that iphones and facebook can cause OSD. There also other websites that go into more detail about internet addiction such as netaddiction.com

Music for the Underground

This week I would like to share a website that is a haven for music junkies. The website is called TheSixytOne.com and it is packed full with artists and songs you will never hear on the radio, let alone on a CD. On this website any one can create either a users profile or a musicians profile. If you are an aspiring artist it is possible to upload your stuff and let people listen to it for free, and if you're extremely kind you can even leave it up for download.
What is so incredible about this website is that one can build up their own music profile. If you go on to an artist page and you like the music you are hearing it is possible to save songs to your own profile. By saving these songs you create your own radio station for any one to listen to. This is a great way to share media with other people because if you like what some one has on your radio you can add the song yourself.
With the development of the web this had made it a lot easier for musicians to share their music. This website is a great example because everything is free for the user, allowing for people to join up, share, listen and interact.

Poll NOLA

Poll NOLA is one of IOKON's project that involves politics in New Orleans. http://pollnola.com/

It is a website what would digitally "track the reputations and press coverage of New Orleans mayoral" race in 2010. It is an interesting website that tracks the popularity of candidates, by gathering data from social networks and all kinds of information throughout cyberspace.

An interesting thing I noticed about this website is that it has a humor section.

Also please watch an episode here.

I challenge you to find better WebTV (not a huge challenge). The ones mentioned in the Salon piece are a good place to start.

Technology and Politics

This article reiterates and adds onto our discussion on how important and affective technology can be to political campaigns, ect. I think future elections will rely on technology more than ever. It will play an essential roll in campaigning and getting the public involved. Obama was the first to take advantage of what we have out there in order to bring people together and share opinions and beliefs, as well as get his own political views out there.

Influence of Technology on Politics

Web-a-thon

Web-a-thons are online fundraisers which, like all web activity, are designed to make raising money easier and quicker. Especially when compared to political cocktail parties and traditional dinners. "From the Frontlines" is one such web-a-thon which was designed to help raise money to send every U.S armed service unit a care package for July 4th (keep in mind this was held last year). This is a good example of political web activity and the convenience the web now offers us. Many talk radio show personalities and others became involved to help raise money for the troops and the entire 8 hour even was broadcasted over the internet.

Facebook Assignment

Friend #1: This friend is relativity active on facebook. Judging from the past few weeks, he will update his status 1 or 2 times per week. He has a school radio show, so a lot of his post and updates are messages concerning that topic. He has just about 500 friends in total, and I believe he pretty much knows all of them in some way or another. He has over 10 photo albums, which are usually comprised of very random pictures and just goofy in general. His profile pictures are usually not very serious/normal, if he is in the picture he is usually doing a funny face. About half the time, he is not even in his profile picture. The groups he is in are mostly related to music and school.

Friends #2: This friend is more active on facebook than friend #1. She usually updates her status 3 to 4 times a week. A lot of her wall post are from the same group of friends. They normally are small one liners that seem like inside jokes. She sees this group of friends usually everyday, but keeps in touch with them on facebook constantly as well. She is very involved with albums and photos in general. She has over 700 photos tagged of her. She also has over 700 friends as well. A lot of her groups are relate to very random things in general, with a lot of "i lost my cell phone and need numbers" groups. Her profile pictures usually involve her with other people in them (close friends).

Friend #3: This friend is highly active on facebook as well. She has mobile access to facebook, and will update her status daily. She has a lot of wall post daily as well. She looks like she keeps in touch with a range of different people. I don't believe she really knows ALL of her friends (she has over 1000). He face book pictures are usually just of her, but all look like they were taking at a party or bar. She is very outgoing and it really shows on facebook as well. She is a part of many different group types, and it looks like she just joins whatever comes to her. I know she also has a lot of photos usually tagged of her, but it look like they are currently taken down. Her status updates are usually concerning her mood or something funny that had happened. She also seems very interested in horoscopes and has pages, quizzes, and posts related to that.

Facebook

Friend #1
This friend updates his status daily both from his iphone and from a computer, kindly sharing some words of wisdom or quoting a movie. He has a normal size number of friends which probably means he knows all of them and they are either family or friends. Although he updates his facebook often there really isnt much else to his information and he isn't in a lot of albums. The groups he belongs to look like they are all related to his hobbies or Maine, which is where he's from.

Friend #2
The first thing that pops out to me is the information this friend provides for other people. It looks like he spent a lot of time filling out his hobbies and quotes so as to come off as intelligent or smart. His friend list include what appear to mostly be friends or family and there are not too many to think he just adds people for the hell of it. Although the amount of groups he belongs to it is hard to imagine he actually keeps up with all of them or even some of them for that matter.

Friend #3
I decided to pick some one who was way more facebook active in all senses. This friend is in over a handful of albums and has almost 10 albums of his own. He updates his status maybe 3 or 4 times a week and generally has at least one comment on each update. The majority of the groups he is in are related to skiing which would make sense because he works really hard at this sport. Although he has 800 + friends I believe that he knows every single one of them through some connection or another. His information is pretty completely filled out showing that he cares what others think of him, but he does not go into extensive detail which means he probably has a life too.

FaceBook Assignment

So looking at my friend would appear to be very boring. The first one would be a relative I never communicate with. We live 2000 miles apart and we dont talk on the phone, we dont email or write letters and with the help of Facebook they only manage to send me app. invites which by the way annoy me to no end. When you look at their page it is filled with useless apps. and not much else. I blip here and there about how her day is going and nothing substantial.

The next person is no doubt one of my daughters friends. I have now somehow been roped into accepting all of her friends as my friends because I feel guilty not accepting them when they send the invites. Looking at their page just makes me feel old. It also makes me wonder how they could have the time to update thier profile so often. They seem to have new comments every hour on the hour. It boggles my mind. It is very much young teenage talk. Right now all the buzz appears to be the Twilight movie coming out on Nov 19 @ midnight (yes I know this because we have had the tickets since sept! OMG!!!) They also appear to be completley obsessed with Edward from the movie and how incredibly cute he is?

The person I selected was my Moms page. It is rather entertaining really. As far behind as I feel she must feel like a fish out of water. Her poor page has almost nothing it. No apps. 12 friends (all family) and 1 comment saying Hi! How are you? from one of said relatives. I am proud of her getting this far. She likes facebook because it allows her to see pictures and updates from family she cant see very often.

It seems as though everyone who is on facebook certainly has a reason. Whether its to keep up with friends or family, or just to socialize and keep up with the daily gossip everyone has their reasons and their must be ALOT of reasond because facebook is Hugh and it appears that the entire United States and many World have a facebook account. It really is amazing if you think about it.

Facebook Analysis

Person #1
Updates her status at least once a day, hardly saying anything. Updates such as “Happy Wednesday!” or others bragging about where she went to dinner with her husband. “Xxx and Yyy just had another fabulous dinner in L.A...we have been spoiling ourselves all week. I love it when our business travel is to the same city!” Some are about how she is sitting in traffic or what she is doing at work. All of the updates were through her cell phone.
She doesn’t have a ridiculous number of friends and they are all people that I’m guessing she knows, and she also is not a member of any groups.
All of her pictures are of her in her wedding dress, but none of her with her husband. She doesn’t play any games or take quizzes, so I think the sole purpose is to update everyone with her life, although she doesn’t have a lot of responses and hardly anyone writes on her wall.

Person #2
He updates his status all the time, but there are several interactions on each post. The updates don’t really say much, complaints about the new facebook, things sports related or about class assignments.
He has a fair amount of friends, and a lot of interactions on his wall, which makes me think he is most likely really friends with his facebook friends.
He is in a ton of groups, all very random and a fan of over a dozen pages, from celebrities to restaurants to newspapers.
All of his pictures portray what he’s like in real life, but maybe a little more dramatic. He doesn’t play any facebook games but he does the quizzes, and often. All are pretty random. I think it’s mostly to play around when bored.

Person #3
Her status updates are daily and almost always about her kids. All of her friends are other moms with pictures of their kids or friends that are married with wedding pictures. They are from all around the country, so most likely friends from college.
She is in a lot of groups, mostly political but that’s all that is on her page, hardly anything else is filled out.
Of her 78 profile photos uploaded in the last year, not one of them is of her by herself and only two have her in them. They are all of her children.
She’s taken a few quizzes, which match her personality, and has only played games a few times.

Facebook Friends

The first person I decided to stalk on facebook was one of my best friends. I found it reasonable to first point out that she has less than fifty friends on facebook. I think this can attest to her actually being friends with the people she adds rather than others who add friends for the heck of it. Her status updates are every couple days and her wall is not necessarily that full with wall posts. Partly due to not having a ton of friends but she has a life outside of the internet and facebook. In her information box, there are some key pieces of information such as name, school, etc but she does not include facts about herself or other random information that most people care not to look at anyway.

The second friend I looked at was another one of my good friends. They are quite the opposite of the first facebook I stalked. His facebook updates happen rather quickly everyday and I can expect about 10 updates throughout the day. These updates I have noticed are not his own words but lyrics from songs that he has listened to that may or may not apply to his life at the time. His friend count is astronomical and posts on his wall happen on a daily if not hourly basis. I tend to think he creates this popularity by drawing attention to himself through his baby girl that has just turned 2. I think a baby is a very good way of drawing attention to yourself if you are wanting it.

Lastly I decided to look at a friend that I have not talked to in a while and wanted to see what was up with his life. I first looked at his friend count, pretty much like the second facebook profile, and this allowed me to conclude that he is fairly popular, at least on facebook. A little different from the two other people, his updates happen once a week maybe twice. He uses his IPhone as a means of facebook rather the computer which I thought was more interesting than any other information I found out on him. I found his profile to be more of a work place rather than a friend tool. His status' display how he finished work or his work, his wall posts are friends from work rather than friends that aren't from work. I think this was interesting to see a business facebook rather than a social networking friendship page.

Facebook Analysis Pt. II

So based on my previous post about the tools to create an online identity, here are 3 examples from my pool of friends (and whatever the choose to let me view on their profiles).

Profile #1 -
Friends - 846 and counting. Groups - 38+ (mainly student organizations or community involved groups and student politics). Photos of this person, that is not theirs but they have been tagged in by others - 1179 and counting with 74 photo albums. Fan pages show their interests and where their support is - Happyslip, Beau Sia (youtube entertainment), Obama (political interest), Starbucks (for fun?). Without going into further nit-picking detail, this friend of mine does not update their status update that often, but other parts of their profile show that they are a very social/outgoing person with a large network of friends and/or connections. This person is opening themselves to a very large audience. Their information page is also filled out sufficiently to show their general interests and their wall show a steady flow of comments.

Profile #2
Friends - 39. Groups - 1 (Denver Job Board). There are only a handful of their photos with their significant other, their information page gives very little information and the birth year is obviously and ridiculously older than what their real age seems to be. The majority of activity are photos and some FB game. This person does not seem very concerned with using FB so much for anything but one of many means to stay in contact with close friends, but especially their significant other.

Profile #3
Friend - 505. Groups - 27 (wide variety of interests). Information page is sufficiently filled out. There are a moderate number of pictures for a typical FB profile (tagged in 174 photos and 10 photo albums). This friend has a tab for "Causes" where they participate in a handful of causes, and their status is updated routinely (at least once a day) where there will always be threads on comments on each. This friend is very active in the community and is politically engaged, and their profile shows this, as well as other aspects of their identity.

Facebook Assignment: A glance at 3 of my friends

1. This friend posts a status update almost twice daily. Sometimes the posts are about is going on in life for that friend or just random blurbs….very random. Because this person is from a foreign country, this friend’s friends are mostly from this friend’s native country. This friend is very much into activist groups so many of the groups this friend participates in are activist groups. This friend rarely uses actual self pictures for their profile picture. Mostly this friend uses current favorite images or favorite characters in shows.
Ultimately, I noticed that this friend tends to use cultural images/phrases/etc. to express their feelings, moods, attitudes, etc.

2. This friend updates their status about 2 or 3 times a week. Mostly, the posts are about what activities this friend did or plans to do. This friend’s friends range from every location and every occupation. This friend is not really in to any groups currently. Because this friend loves to take pictures, the profile pictures of this friend tend to be around events or places visited.
In the end, I noticed that this friend loved to travel, make friends all around the world, and all the while take pictures of the entire trip’s adventure.

3. This friend rarely updates their status – typically 2 to 3 times a month. Mostly the posts are about things this friend did or other internet related things of interest, sometimes video clips. This friend is very outdoorsy and tends to befriend people of similar interests. Mostly the groups this friend is into are nature or environmentalist groups. This friend’s profile pictures typically reflect environmental interests such as hiking, biking, wildlife, etc.
Over all, I noticed this friend likes to show off interesting environmentally based things such as pictures, videos, articles, or phrases because that is the friend’s primary interest.

Facebook Stalking as Homework

Facebook Stalk #1

The person that I chose first is a friend who absolutely lives on facebook, he updates his statuses mulitple times of day and they are usually within the realm of emo expression or attacks against other people. He uses his facebook as malicious tool to directly and indirectly attack people or champion for causes. It is riddled with petty drama as well as self-inflating images. There are also a lot of links and "applications" that are pop-culture oriented, mostly tv shows. All in all, this person's facebook is a more flamboyant expression of the actual person; my guess is that this person is afraid to be truly them self in public so the internet is a way to express these suppressed aspects. This user is our age.

Facebook Stalk #2

This next person is a recently married and her facebook makes that very evident. Whether its the profile picture, status updates, or wedding book applications, this facebook scream marriage. Her facebook is also used as a promotional tool for her new upstart design business; she has contact information, business description, and details in her info section. Lastly, it appears that she uses facebook as a tool for keeping in touch with people, especially her family, as most of the wall posts are "how are you", "haven't talked to you in a while", etc. She also has a few quizzes like "what celebrity but are you". This user is two years out of college.

Facebook Stalk #3

My last facebook stalk is of a friend who has just entered college at a art institute. She has lots of "artsty" pictures of her tagged as well as has several albums showcasing her work. It is a very expressionistic facebook, but it seems to be a bit more positive compared to Facebook stalk #1. This girl is all about promoting her art and making an artistic statement whether that is through links or "artsy/poetic/coded" status updates. She is also a political activist as she is friends with a lot of politicians and political movements; she also is a fan of these politicians as well.

Victory for Net Nuetrality

There has been some major steps forward in net neutrality recently. CNN has this video briefly describing it. Basically, net nuetrality is in the books now which prevent the phone and cable companies from skewing access to the internet.

And don't worry, I will post my facebook findings in a bit.

GLOBAL FACEBOOK

My boyfriend is Australian, and lives in Perth, Western Australia. So when starting this assignment, I thought it would be interesting to look at how people in different countries use Facebook versus in the United States. From what I observed, on a majority of my friends facebook accounts from Australia, they use facebook very differently than in the US. Their pages are filled with quizzes of every kind. It is basically what all of them do on the social network. They rarely write on each others walls. It is mainly a page full of quizzes and applications with status updates every once in awhile. None of them have very many pictures tagged of them. I found this very interesting compared to people in the United States. This leads me to the second person I looked at. This girl was from Croatia. Again, like the Australians, she used facebook as an area to take many quizzes, but she also had albums after albums of only pictures of herself and no one else. I also notice, even though she is from Croatia, she wrote in English in many of her statuses and picture comments. I then checked my friends page who is from Switzerland and I noticed the same thing, that many of his updates were in English. Lastly, I looked at a girl who I lived with in Barcelona, Spain for a month when I was in high school. Compared to the other 2 from Australia and Croatia, I saw hers as pretty typical from what mine or other citizens of the United States facebook looks like. She had tons of pictures from her at her University tagged as well as on vacations. She did not update her status frequently, but when people wrote on her wall or she had a status it was in Spanish or Catalun. From looking at 3 people from 3 different countries, I found it a cultural thing as to how you act on facebook and what you do.

Now lastly, Here is a funny video about facebook teasing it with Eharmony.com.

Align Left

Facebook blog-stalking

Friend #1

She is a female who updates her status at least three times a day.  She usually post either about how she is feeling that day or what music she is listening too. Her profile pictures change often but always with her and a person she loves, if it is a good friend or her boyfriend. She posts pictures of every event she has a camera and always tags herself (as well as all her friends) in every photo. The top three groups she is in consist of music, hometown, and supporting good efforts around the world. She doesn't take a lot of quizzes or play very many games, but she does post update/video on current news that she thinks her friends might be interested in, like the announcement of a groups tour.

Friend #2

This girl keeps her life semi-classified. She only posts on her status about once a week and limits the amount people can see on her wall, most of the time you can only see what has been posted the last week and everything else is closed off. However, all her pictures are posted and usually her profile picture is of her and something to do with her sorority. In fact, most of the pictures she is tagged in are her at sorority functions. She does not belong to a lot of groups and the majority of the ones she belongs to have to deal with Greek life. She is "friends" with some celebrities like Paris Hilton, but she does not do quizzes or play games that it looks like.

Friend#3

This guy will update his post almost five times a day. Usually the posts are somehow related to work, how he is bored at work, about the temperature at work, and even about the office furniture. He defiantly comments more on his own post then anyone else does. He is 'friends' with a good amount of bands but also stores. His groups range vastly from one another from music, to politics, and then on to random groups. His profile picture is a photo of Rodney  Dangerfield from Caddyshack. Most of his profile pictures are either funny photos of him or of famous actors. He doesn't play a lot of games but his friends vote him in a lot of quizzes they take.

Facebook Friends

Friend 1:

He updates his status at least 4 to 5 times a day, as well as posting interesting, silly or political things one to two times a day. He has 148 friends, and is friends only with people he knows, mostly people from his college and isn’t friends with any bands, famous people or things. All of his profile pictures are photos taken of him by others usually out on trips or at restaurants, they are usually photos of just him, or cropped to show just him, with a few with other people. It doesn’t look like he ever participates in any quizzes, games or groups. He portrays himself as a funny, open, clever person that is cool enough to have a Facebook, but doesn’t fully participate within it.

Friend 2:

She updates her status 2 to 6 times a week usually commenting on something she thought about or did that day. She has 325 friends, and most of them look like they are from her home or college. She is part of groups about French politics, College spirit groups and a few humor, possible inside joke groups. Almost all of the photos are of his by her or with one of two other girls they are usually taken by her holding the camera up, and a few taken by other people; she usually has the same pouty expression in all of her photos. It doesn’t look like she ever participates in games or quizzes, but posts photos fairly frequently at least once a week. It makes her seem mildly involved with herself, but fairly open and friendly and she gets many comments on he profile every day.

Friend 3:

He updates his status a few times a month, usually when he has something clever to say about his present situation. He has 278 friends from all over the country a majority from his home or college however. The groups that he is a part of are usually something that pertains to politics or college organizations with a few or something pertaining to beer. Most of the photos are of him by himself, and about half are some sort of humorous photo that actually mocks him or shows him in an unflattering light. It looks like the few quizzes that he participates in usually have to do with funny movies and the character you might be in the movie.

Facebook Profiles

Friend I:
To begin with she has over 500 photos of herself that either she put up or was tagged in along with over 115 albums has been tagged according to where, when and for the most part who is in the photos. Her profile picture is just a general profile picture. Also she has over 800 friends none being celebrities or people that are in the limelight one way or the other. Passed the multitude of friends and photos though she isn't very active with updates or posts. She doesn't belong too many groups or fan pages although the ones she is in are school related. It would seem that she uses the amount of friends and photos as a form of communicating with people if she has to.

Friend II
Is very very into updating his "wall" when it comes to posting links to videos/articles that he finds online that usually are more intellectually based (science daily, ted talks, ect). He also has a fair amount of posts about either his art or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu whether its fan pages, video posts, status updates, and photos. When he does status updates that don't have a link they are usually witty in nature. His profile picture is of Hank Hill from King of the Hill and has had other pictures of other animated characters. This friend of mine uses his facebook as a blog to share little morsels of wisdom he finds on the internet to showcase his interests.

Friend III
Seems to just have a facebook to have it. Isn't active really at all on it, has only 20 friends and 5 pictures of himself. His profile is pretty barren which can make me wonder if he is very selective when it comes to using it or whether he has an account to have a sense of belonging by just having one.

Facebook friends

1:
She does not outwardly write about herself or share information that way, but instead she chooses to join 45 groups and be friends with all sorts of different athletes (Michael Phelps), bands (Death Cab for Cutie, Bob Marley), and tv shows (Hey Arnold). Although the one section she did fill out to great extent under her "info" page is the jobs section. Her profile pictures are of her and friends, basically normal although in some she does come across as slightly...odd. Just a little out there, in a good way. I get the feeling she would rather not write about herself but let people base their impressions of her off her work experience and "fans". This is a safe way to tell about yourself without outwardly writing about yourself.

2:
He updates his status very very frequently. He chooses not to include any information about himself but he does have 112 "fan pages" he is apart of including various bands, actors, locations, films, and businesses. I also found it interesting that he choose to make his friends his various "family members" filling up all the sections of married to...siblings...and children with friends. He is obviously very active with facebook and likes the communication aspect of it (talking/exchanging with friends)

3:
Filled out a lot of information about herself, but the info is shallow. under activities it includes "blasting loud music. dancing in the passengers seat." Both activities she may feel makes her seem "cool" or fun. She is also friends with Barack Obama and Robert Pattinson. I just feel she is trying too hard to be seen as cool by her peers and she is just forming to the likes of everyone.

Facebook Analysis

The questions posted on the assignment are important things to consider, but from my personal perspective, I feel that it's much more complicated. Each person has a variety of ways to express their identity on FaceBook. They can also control which groups of people can see what. It also depends on how savvy each person is with FB and with the changes that FB makes over time. From my own FB experience, I shall give my general analysis and then take a look at some examples.

Unlike the old Myspace, there is no top friends list unless one choses to use an application to designate the ranking of important people in their lives. Although it is not a very prominent thing on FB. I think that most prominent factors are: status updates, number of friends, comments, pictures, information/about me page, events, as well as pages/groups.

When it comes to commenting, it is evident how savvy a person is with FB if they choose to reply to a post by making another post on the person's wall, or to comment on the post itself. This drives the audience to follow the conversation on one wall only. This way, a person's private profile can control who sees the thread of comments on that post. Instead of having the other person's friends follow the thread, only people who are friends with them can see it.

Generally, more friends, comments, and pictures show a sign of popularity... as well as extreme boredom or having no life outside of the computer. Pictures on the other hand are a way to show off either one's vanity or one's fun life.

The About Me/Info page can have as much or as little information about oneself as one wishes. Groups and fan pages as well show their activism and interests. Relationship statuses is also a part of the Info, but it's quite a complicated subject for a short blog post (I might discuss it later if someone else does not beat me to it).

Some people are more conscientious about their profile than others. There are a number of my friends who rarely ever goes on and/or can care less about who sees what or to put much effort into customizing their FB. Some go one to play games, take random quizzes, or play around with applications and invite friends to also participate. I've also seen friends who claim to be "Married" to each other when in reality they are not, I can't quite put the words as to why but it's just something that's amusing and shows how close/good friends they are. Friends who are into music like to occasionally post youtube videos as well.

I shall pick 3 examples to elaborate on my next post.

FACEBOOK

Friend 1:

Her status is updated on average about 4-5 times per week. Her friends are people from high school and from college. The groups she has joined are mainly general interests, favorite food(groups) and just random interests. Her profile picture is of her laying on the grass with her arms spread and a large puffy long down jacket on. She is portrayed as funny, cool, and simple. It portrays her “real world self” well.

Friend 2:

His status is updated about twice a day, but not consistent. His friends are also high school and college friends, along with a few family members. His groups range from political groups to “how a GIRL wants it.” A lot of them seem like groups that would make him seem cooler in some peoples eyes. His profile pic is of him and a friend in a bar with sombreros on. This pictures suggests that he likes to party and go out. He does not take quizzes or surveys.

Friend 3:

His status is updated about 3 times a week. His friends are also people from high school and college. He’s in 22 groups that represent favorite TV shows, interests, and favorite online videos. His profile pic is of him snowboarding without a shirt on. He doesn’t seem to participate in quizzes or games really. This person has many pictures of social occasions such as in bars, at parties.

Facebook analysis assignment

Choose 3 of your "friends" facebook pages and for each, analyze how that person is performing their identity via their facebook page.

Consider the following questions and write up your observations for each profile as your blog post for this week:

How frequent and timely are their status updates?
Who or what are their friends?
What groups are the in?
What their profile pics like? (what are they of and if they are of the person how are they portrayed?)
What quizzes and other "games" participate in and post the results of?

For those of you who were not here, the point of this assignment is to get outside our normal way of looking at Facebook and to test out some of the ideas set forth in the reading about identity performance online.

digital media and young people

Here are some questions to discuss on Wednesday.

Digital Youth White Paper

1. What were the two main research questions?

2. How was the research conducted?

3. Discuss the 3 genres of participation:
Hanging out
Messing around
Geeking out

4. And the 3 other foci:
networked publics
peer-based learning
new media literacy

Why do youth (heart) social networks?

1. Why do they?

2. What are networked publics?

3. What are the 4 properties not typically present in face-to-face public life?

4. What is impression management?

5. What can we know by studying facebook and myspace profiles?

Software Pirating

Music and videos aren't the only illegal files shared over the internet. People are also downloading thousands of dollars worth of software everyday. When I think of software being pirated, I immediately think of the company Adobe. Since we are this class, we are all somehow connected to Digital Media Studies. And that means, that a lot of us need Adobe software to work on assignments for certain classes (unless you want to go to the computer lab every time). So, I looked into getting Adobe are realized just how much each program is, but after some discussion with classmates, I found out there's ways around paying for the software.
This article really points out how many people illegally download Adobe software off the internet. It showed that 60% of Photoshop users pirated the software! This is definitely an issue Adobe should be concerned about. I mean the price for Adobe Photoshop is $700! So we're not talking about stealing a song you can buy for 99 cents, but rather stealing software that cost a lot of money. I know the entire Adobe packages are accesesable and those cost around $2400. This is serious money we are talking about...

FTC New Blog Guidlines

The Federal Trade Commission set in new guidelines for bloggers to disclose what companies gives them free merchandise or pay them to review their products to make sure that they aren't just reviewing things that they are getting paid for or free products to get a good review. This brings up a whole bunch of discussion not only timing of the guidelines since bloggers have been getting more traffic but also if there should be the same guidelines for other people who aren't bloggers.

Teens and MySpace

While I was reading the chapter on the role of social networking sites for teens, and after the movie on Wednesday, I remembered a video a friend of mine showed me a few weeks ago. It's hilarious because it's pretty cliche. The typical 17-year-old girl that thinks she's independent, but went out and met a stranger on MySpace, then didn't expect to get in trouble for it. Then to top it off, her brother is recording it to post on the Internet.

Other than it being really funny, I think it does a good job of showing how important of a role MySpace played in her life. She thought it was the end of the world.

Sister Busted by Brother
This girl goes to meet some guy she on MySpace and comes home late and gets chewed out by her mother. The most amusing part of this clip is how her brother is going on in the background. His comments cracked me up.

Internet Porn

One of the largest and rarely talked about problem with out internet today is the accessibility to online pornography. Anybody, any age, anytime of the day can google a keyword such as "sex" and come up with thousands of results with explicit pictures and other material on the sites.

An anonymous person whom wrote a short rant/blog about this issue suggests that the masses have power to force change, and need to do so. How we filter or change the accessibility of the internet is still unclear but the longer we wait, the more our children are getting exposed to this material. The psychological effects of being exposed to pornography at an early age can be detrimental and life changing.

Music and internet

our generation's is consumed by the the internet. If it is through staying connected, finding information, or just finding people with the same interest the internet connects us all. One way it does this is with the collaboration of music. Sights like last.fm and PT allow people with common music taste to find one another. On these sites you can   blog to peers all over the US about shows that you just went to, talk about the set list, list all the past shows you have gone to and see what you have in common with one another, have random conversations, or share music and similar musical interest.

on last.fm you can find..

Here is to find others who have similar musical taste as you (not as limiting as PT for musical choices)

You can blog, become friends with similar taste, find music videos, and albums

You have to buy the music but it allows you to find music you didn’t know was out there

make your own playlist.....

on PT you can find

Here you can  blog to peers all over the US about shows that you just went to

Talk about the set list

List all the past shows you have gone to and see what you have in common with one another

Or just have random conversations.

South Park - Youth and the Internet

When talking about youth and the internet, my first thoughts came to the South Park episode about World of Warcraft. South Park is one of the most satyrical shows on television these days and this portion of an episode really does justice to the kids and their usage of the internet. Kids lose out on playing outside and exercise with the new internet gaming and technologies out there. It really is sad to see this happen, but then again, I am on my computer a lot as well!!

Youth Cannot Live Without Internet

I was on BBC news, and came upon an article about the Youth and web use written just a week ago. The news story was about a survey taken from an online charity, Youthnet. The results showed that 75% of 16 to 24 years feel they cannot live without the net. It shows the dependence of the Internet to our generation and all of its usage. The article is pretty self-explanatory, so I will let you all just read it :)

Who wants to be Girl Talk?

I thought it would be interesting to post my blog on a program called AudioMulch because it is very relevant to the movie we just watched on Girl Talk. This program allows for any one to become a mash up artist, whether they want to make a career out of it or just mess around with music for fun. What I really like about this program is that it allows you to download a free trial where you have almost full access to the program for sixty days. With today's advancement in technology and the web I feel like this has allowed users more access to a larger number of programs. Programs such as this let your average consumer "test" out the product to decide whether it is worth purchasing.

Here is a video showing how to use the program:

How Information and Communication Technologies matter to Youth

I researched youth and the future of the internet and there were many articles dedicated to the youth's "obsession" with internet and how their involvement is only growing. One website, which seems pretty unprofessional at first, actually has some descent information and created a detailed research project dedicated to youth and their connections with communication technologies. The three main themes found from the project are convenience, fun, and connections. All are very simple and relatable but a quick overview of each: convenience, with the idea that it is quick and easy to do anything on the internet or via cellphone, there are shifting boundaries, and immediate gratification. Fun because these technologies are seen as a "new toy" and a new form of entertainment. And connections because of the different relationships you can have with people in these mediated worlds.

Digital Natives

There's an interesting project going on between The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the Research Center for Information Law at the University of St. Gallen, about Digital Natives. They have looked into the effects of being a Digital Native and how they perceive the world, especially the internet, in comparison to those who did not grow up in a Digital environment. They then use this research to inform people the best way to developing teaching and new technology to fit the new way that Digital Natives take in their environment. The website itself is fairly interesting and links to a Wiki page, published books that have been written on the subject, press on Digital Natives, videos and even a blog. It doesnt seem like the blog has been updated for a while, but the site itself is linked to many other pages about the projects centered around Digital Native culture and discussions, it links to pages on sites like, Twitter, Facebook, You Tube, myspace and del.icio.us which seem to be constantly updated, and it seems to provide an excellent inter-collaborative site that fits in with the Digital Native culture.
